GIDEONS AT ST BARNABAS CHURCH |
24 April 2012 |
|
| |
St Barnabas Church
welcomed Jean and Brian Hickford from the Gideons to
come and speak to us on Sunday 15th April. It was a
lovely service and it was great to hear the good things
that are happening through the ministry of the Gideons
both locally and all over the World. The retiring
collection and the collection tubes on the day raised
enough money for 90 New Testaments which will be
presented worldwide. So our thanks go to everyone who
came and supported the Gideons Ministry. If you missed
this Service, you will get an opportunity to see the
Gideons in the Autumn watch this space for further
details.

|
|
| |
Good Friday
started with Family Praise in which some of our young people acted out the
story of the last days of Jesus. with everyone making the journey for
themselves by following the action around the church. The service was
followed by drinks and hot cross buns. Churches Together in Kenilworth
and District held a service of witness in Talisman Square
followed by a Walk of Witness to Abbey
Fields for the planting of the cross. From 12 noon until 3pm the Bishop of
Coventry lead The Three Hours Devotion at St Nicholas
Church with the theme 'Seeing the Crucified Christ and
Being Seen by Him'. Follow the link for photos and a

Our Palm Sunday
procession took place on 1st April to remind us of Jesus' entry into
Jerusalem. The service started outside the swimming

EASTER LABYRINTH |
31 March 2012
|
|
|
|
Once again
the Easter Labyrinth at St Nicholas Church in was
another huge success. On display just before the Easter
holidays, over 180 children and their teachers came
along from four local schools to see the Labyrinth,
which featured displays, interactive activities, images,
craft and worksheets to give an insight into the Easter
story. The children’s behaviour reflected their
enjoyment in the enthusiastic way they joined in, showed
interest and asked questions. The teachers thought it
was excellent and some of them said they had learnt
something they hadn’t known before.

COVENTRY
PILGRIMAGE |
30 March 2012 |
|
| |
Stephen Verney’s
inspiring story in his book “Fire in Coventry”, of the
Cross of Nails 40-day journey around Coventry and
Warwickshire before the consecration of Coventry’s new
Cathedral on 25th May 1962 was one of the motivations
behind the decision to repeat the pilgrimage to mark the
Jubilee year of the Cathedral. A weekday event covered
the route with walks of 4½ to 6½ miles each evening
between 5pm and 8pm from Monday 26th March to Friday
30th March 2012. A pilgrim service was held each evening
in a church on the route. On Tuesday 27th March about 60
people walked the 6 mile route from Burton Green to
Stoneleigh. Follow the link for a full report and

ORGAN
RESTORATION CONSULTATION |
9 March 2012 |
|
| |
The
consultation meeting was held on Saturday 3rd March,
chaired by Mervyn Kimberley, attended by guest experts
Nigel Allcoat (DAC organ Advisor), Trevor Tipple
(Technical Advisor), Ian Carter (Cousans Organs) and the
Restoration Team. The meeting was opened and closed by
Prayers from Richard Awre, followed by addresses by
Keith Grierson and Nigel Allcoat. The main body of time
was given over to questions and comments from the
congregation of some 50 people. All questions were fully
and comprehensively answered by our guest experts and
restoration team, with no deferrals. Opinions voiced
from the floor were unanimous in their support and
approval of the proposed restoration, with no
dissentions. The meeting closed at approximately 12
noon. The next stage of the process is to lay the matter
before the PCC on 19th March 2012 for their approval to
proceed, leading to the official Appeal launch on 3rd
June 2012 to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
Celebrations.

OPEN DOORS |
26 February 2012
|
|
| |
We welcomed The Reverend David
Bolton to talk at our Awakenings Service on Sunday 26th February. David
spoke about 'Open Doors' which is an international ministry serving
persecuted Christians and churches worldwide. We learned that North
Korea is the most hostile country in which to live and practise the
Christian faith, with many Christians arrested and languishing in labour
camps. There are 49 other countries across the world where extremism,
nervous dictators and systemic corruption are prime reasons for the
persecution of Christians. Find out more and details of how you can help
through prayer and action by following the link below.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION DAY |
12 February 2012
|
|
| |
Fifteen couples met together in
the church for a morning of reflection on Saturday 11th February. They
are all to be married at St Nicholas Church during 2012. It was a chance
to take time from the busyness of planning their wedding day to spend an
hour or two together thinking ahead to their plans for the future and
what expectations they had for married life. Some of the quizzes and
games were quite light hearted while other discussions raised issues
that can so easily cause problems in a relationship. It was agreed by
all that the most important thing in any marriage is communication. The
morning ended with lunch being served in The Parochial Hall by the
Mothers' Union who had also been on hand to provide drinks and biscuits
during the morning. Each month the photos of the couples getting married
are displayed on the notice board in church so please look out for them
and remember them in your prayers.

perspective of the shepherds. In a light hearted sketch, we saw an
ordinary night for the shepherds turn into an extraordinary night with a
visit from the Angel Gabriel and the star guiding them to
see Mary and Joseph and the new-born baby Jesus. If you missed the service, or

TIME FOR TIGER AND THE
TEA |
4 December 2011 |
|
| |
We were
not among the most expected audience at the "The Tiger
Who Came to Tea" performance, aimed at the +3 year olds.
No children in our company, on Sunday 4th December we
nevertheless made our way to the Warwick Arts Centre and
we enjoyed it nonetheless. Those of us who havenÂ’t seen
the play can still pick up the book. For it reminds us
that when the evenings seem never-ending and sparkling
lights brighten up our townÂ’s wintry streets, we should
expect the unexpected... and store plenty of cookies in
our cupboards.

YOUNG AT CHURCH AND WORK |
17 November 2011 |
|
|
|
On Saturday 12th November four
of us walked a circular route to include Wroxall Abbey and Baddesley
Clinton. With gladdened hearts, we trudged through fields of grass and
cabbage and slippery mud. Our journey was made more fatiguing by the
heavy sludge clinging to our boots. There were several gates and stiles
on our planned ramble. After a short rest, Sandra guided us to some
woodland of enchanting autumnal beauty – dappled shades of olive green
and rich browns and gold and amber. We paused to enjoy the apples Kit
gave us for lunch and then headed back to the abbey. Distant cows mooed
us home, as we crossed the final field. We will do more walks in 2012,
if you would like to offer a walk please contact us.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD |
10 November 2011 |
|

What a great effort! Many thanks to all
members of the congregations of St Nicholas and St Barnabas for all your
help with shoe boxes which will probably be sent to needy children in
the Ukraine this year. Every one was so generous with gifts for the
boxes, with monetary donations and with their time whether it was
working on the evening to assemble the boxes or knitting hats, gloves
etc. throughout the year. The results were thrilling as we broke our own
record again! We have sent 72 boxes together with enough money to cover
the transport of all these and a donation of £41.50. Well done! Jean

PROFESSOR STEPHEN PATTISON |
23 October 2011 |
|
|
|
On Sunday 23rd October we
welcomed Professor Stephen Pattison from the University of Birmingham to
our Awakenings Service to talk on Artefacts, which are the works of
human hands and owe their existence entirely to the human race. In many
ways, they occupy the same relation to humans as humans do to God. But
for the most part we see through and past the artefacts that are the
companions of our everyday existence. In this talk, Stephen helped make
artefacts a bit more visible within Christian gaze and concern so that
they are seen as having a proper place and value, not just blamed for
the materialist failings of their creators.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK |
30 May 2011 |
|
| |
Many thanks to everyone who collected those red envelopes during
Christian Aid Week, also to those who put money in them. This year we
collected a total for the Parish of £3,114 (£2,458 St Nicholas & £656
St Barnabas). This compares with £3,710 (£2,589 + £1,121) last year, a
drop of 16%, caused no doubt by the current economic climate, plus a
shortage of collectors. It will
be a help to those farmers struggling to raise the crops of coffee
and beans which we so much enjoy. Malcolm Trewick & Phil Highley.

Janet Cherry's last Sunday as
churchwarden was marked with a presentation at the end of the Family
Praise Service on Sunday 8th May. Keith Grierson, Churchwarden made a
speech of thanks and presented Janet with gifts of flowers and a
suitcase which can be used on well deserved holidays. Janet responded
with a light hearted speech during which she revealed all the useful
things she has carried in her bag to help with her role and now handed
over, including WD40, Blu-tack and a multi-point screwdriver! Richard,
our vicar, has written his own words of appreciation for Janet's work of
the past five years.

THE RIGHTS AND WRONGS OF ROYAL MARRIAGE |
6 May 2011
|
|
|
|
The
Rights and Wrongs of Royal Marriage is the name of the illustrated talk
given by Professor Rebecca Probert on Wednesday 27th April. Rebecca is
the countryÂ’s leading authority on the history of marriage and also a
parishioner of St Nicholas. In this fascinating talk Rebecca explained
how the strange laws which govern royal marriages have led to
heartbreak, farce and confusion and why they should be changed if we are
to avoid serious constitutional problems in the future. Everyone enjoyed
the evening and Rebecca's generosity in giving her time which raised
£198 for church funds.
