For the third year running
our town Mayor chose Kenilworth Golf Club to host a charity golf day.
For his year in office the Mayor, Cllr Richard Davies, named the
Parochial Hall Restoration Appeal as one of his two charities and
members of the restoration committee organised the golf day on Richard’s
behalf, which took place on 28th April 2010. |

There were fewer teams than
last year, with 14 teams entering – even then we had quite a few changes
within teams over the few days prior to the event and one team arriving
as a two instead of a four! To their advantage the Kenilworth Golf Club
Champion, Rob Owens, happened to be at the club and he along with
another member were happy to join in the day and complete the team. Val
and Ernie Stene did a great job registering the teams, checking
handicaps and issuing their cards. Teams were made up of local
businesses and individuals. There were imaginative team names such as;
Powerful Stuff, Bogeymen, Boston Bashers and Wright Bunch. Players then
enjoyed bacon butties with tea or coffee with the Mayor and his wife,
Erica, who had come to wish them well. Once everyone was fed and watered
and had score cards in hand, they went out onto the course for a shotgun
start at 1.30pm. The competition was to be a team Stableford on ¾
handicap with the best 3 scores on each hole to count. The weather had
been so good for the 10 days prior to the event we were pleased it
stayed fine for one more day, and although cooler during the afternoon,
the rain stayed away. |

By 5.30pm teams were
returning to the club house and handing in their cards. Val and Ernie
were ready at the computer to input the scores and determine the
winners. Players were ready for a drink at the bar and had a bit of time
to relax, change and assess their game before dinner at 7.00pm. |

The Mayor and Mayoress
returned in time for pre-dinner drinks and then all players, plus a few
extra guests sat down to a dinner of avocado & crabmeat salad, duck
breast with a kumquat jus and profiteroles with chocolate sauce. Before
the results were announced Brian Melling, President of Kenilworth Golf
Club, welcomed everyone to the Club for this now traditional annual
event. Andrew Overton, Chair of the Restoration Committee said a few
words thanking Kenilworth Golf Club for the use of their Club before
handing over to the Mayor, Richard Davies. Richard gave a short speech
saying it was the first event he had started when there was no-one there
– they were all on the tees! He also spoke of the support that
Kenilworth had given the previous week when the Fusiliers had marched
through one their welcome home tour. |
