Coventry Pilgrimage

26th March - 1st April 2012

Stephen Verney’s inspiring story in his book “Fire in Coventry”, of the Cross of Nails 40-day journey around Coventry and Warwickshire, in which Christians of different denominations participated, before the consecration of Coventry’s new Cathedral on 25th May 1962 was one of the motivations behind the decision to repeat the pilgrimage to mark the Jubilee year of the Cathedral. The plan for 2012 is to follow the route of the 40-mile way-marked circular footpath, the Coventry Way. It is hoped that Christians from many different churches and denominations will join together to walk and pray for Coventry and the surrounding towns and villages.

Weekday Event

A weekday event will cover the route with walks of 4 ½ to 6 ½ miles each evening between 5pm and 8pm from Monday 26th March to Friday 30th. On Saturday starting at 10.30am and Sunday starting at 12.30pm walks will also be arranged. Pilgrims will return home each night. A pilgrim service will be held each evening in a church on the route, at 8pm on weekdays and 6.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. Why not mark one of those days in your diary now and join the pilgrims as they do a short evening walk.

Weekend Event

A weekend event for experienced walkers, youth groups etc. will cover the route with long walks from 5pm on Friday evening to Sunday, pilgrims being accommodated in Kenilworth and Bedworth en route. St Nicholas and St John’s churches in Kenilworth have offered to accommodate the pilgrims on Friday March 30th. They will then be “breakfasted” before they set off on their journey to Bedworth on Saturday. More details of how you can offer your help for this evening and morning hospitality will be published here nearer the time and in the weekly newsletter.

Setting out on a journey for a spiritual purpose is an ancient act of proven worth. “Everyday” people stepping aside to walk and pray together will bring physical and mental fitness while deepening a spiritual awareness. We invite you to be a “Coventry Pilgrim”. Heather Alford
