 Confirmation

What is Confirmation?

People who have been baptised may be confirmed provided they are old enough to renew for themselves the promises made for them at their baptism by their parents and godparents.

The bishop presides at the service and will use the opportunity of the sermon to talk to the candidates about the responsibilities of adult Christian life and they will then make their public profession of faith.  During the service the bishop prays that the Holy Spirit will come upon those who are to be confirmed. They kneel before the bishop, who lays his hands on the head of each, saying:

Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit.

How we prepare for confirmation

We run two courses each year for those wishing to be confirmed.  A group for the under 18's and another called Christian Basics for adults.  Basics is for those wanting to know more about Christianity, those seeking to be confirmed or those who simply want a refresher in the basics of our faith.

Both courses take place in the winter months and provide an opportunity to explore the Christian Faith through informal discussion.

What are the next steps?

Just speak to one of the clergy and let them know of your interest.  Don't worry if you have not been baptised already, this can be arranged in conjunction with your confirmation.

Where can I find out more?

You'll find more information about confirmation on the Church of England website
