Services at St
Nicholas and St Barnabas draw upon the rich variety of traditional and
contemporary worship that is part of the Anglican Church. "Awakenings"
is a contemporary service which takes place on the 4th Sunday at St
Nicholas Church and provides time to explore some of life's big
questions.
Who is it for?
Anyone is welcome. It is does not matter if you are a regular
church goer or if you never usually go to church.
What happens at Awakenings?
We worship God through music, listen to a talk, pray, and
meet with others after the service over tea and coffee. |
What is
the music like? |
The music is led by
a band – singers, keyboard, drums, guitars plus woodwind and brass.
Awakenings uses the best of modern worship songs and traditional hymns.
There are both lively and more reflective songs. Traditional hymns are
played in a contemporary style. |

What
should I do during the worship? |
The choice is yours.
You can sing, listen, stand or sit as you feel led. The words are on a
screen although a word sheet is available if required. There are usually two
or three songs at the start of the service and then others later on. |
What are
the talks like? |
Specially invited
speakers talk on a chosen subject that is relevant to everyday life. They
last about 20 minutes. |
Can I
bring children to Awakenings? |
Yes. We have a group
for younger children called JAM (Jesus And Me) which
meet in the Parochial Hall during the service and they join the rest of the
congregation for the end of the service. A crèche is provided in the church
for pre-school children. |
Do I have
to do anything during the service? |
No. Just come as you
and participate as you feel you wish. It is not the sort of service where
anyone is put under the spotlight! |
What do I
wear? |
The choice is yours.
There is no dress code at St Nicholas and St Barnabas for any of the
services. |
How long
does Awakenings last? |
One hour; from
10.00am -11.00am. |
